Welcome to a fascinating chapter in philately.
On September 2, 1945 Ho Chi Minh declared the independence of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam. Some time after this date, and until December 1946, the stamps of Indo-china were reprinted and overprinted by the new government using worn machinery in sub-optimal conditions, resulting in many perforation, overprint, paper and color varieties. This site is a comprehensive reference guide to these emissions. In addition to stamp listings, information about known covers bearing Viet Minh overprints is presented in the covers section. While most were philatelically inspired, these attractive items are quite scarce. Thanks to Jack Dykhouse for some great scans from his collection. The reference section contains information about catalogs, papers and color types, and sources for additional reading. The locals section features a number of different local issues and overprints from the years 1946-1955. If this is your first visit, I encourage you to take a quick read through the Site Overview. It will orient you with the logic behind the information on this site and should answer a number of questions. Please contact me at to share your comments or corrections.
